The image in the mirror is a false image. When we look in the mirror the image of our face is inverted; people do not know how they really look, since mirror replicate the world, they duplicate it inverting left and right and show an environment that looks real but is, as Foucault calls it, an heterotypic space.
Said space, even if it corresponds to a place, is not actually located is that place, but is nonetheless connected with the other spaces that surround it. The mirror can therefore embody both a positive or a negative value, depending on the case: in the mirror one can get lost or can recognise himself, we find out what is fleeting, beauty, and what is eternal, existence.
It distinguishes the dissimilar from the similar. “The mirror is not only a symbol of deceit, fugacity, vanity, it also represents their opposite: truth, eternity and reality. Our eyes do not lie: they are the mirror of the soul, the real expression of all the faces we are able to show in each situation. The other person, like the external world, is always a reflection of what we are and what we not always want to see. When things do find the right place inside of us, the reflection of what is outside changes, simply because the way we perceive and observe reality changes. It’s like we could go beyond the filter represented by the body and reach the others’ soul through their eyes”. (Daniele Toesca)
