Ecstasy (from the Greek ἔκστασις, composed by ἐκ o ἐξ + στάσις, ex-stasis, “to be outside”) is a psychic state of suspension and mystic elevation of the mind, that is sometimes perceived as estranged from the body; for this reason its etymology indicates the out of body perception.

Some claim it to be a state of annihilation of Self or of identification with God or the Soul of the World.

Ecstasy is the sacred moment in which illumination occurs, and it is the full development of the potentials and the natural qualities of the person him or herself. This state has also been called omniscience, or supreme and perfect wisdom, from the Sanskrit anuttarā-samyak- saṃbodhi, commonly called Bodhi which corresponds to the illumination of the Buddha. It is the state in which the mind becomes unlimited and is not separated from the rest of the world any longer, the point where the microcosm of the person melts into the macrocosm of the Universe. A state of Nirvana becomes thus possible, meaning a concentration on the self and an awareness of one’s own energy.

In this work by Daniele Toesca mankind can relive an artistic ecstasy, the most tangible manifestation of the Absolute, in which the active and the passive aspects, the conscious and unconscious sides of the mind are not in conflict anymore, but they blend in a harmonious synthesis of cosmic communion with Nature.
